Why We Start Celebrating Fall in August (And We're Not Sorry!)
8/10/20263 min read
If you've ever walked into our house in early August and spotted pumpkins on the table, cozy blankets on the couch, or caught us sipping a pumpkin-flavored coffee before Labor Day... welcome. You're our kind of people. And if you've ever wondered, "Why do people start celebrating fall so early?" we're here to tell you—there's actually a pretty good reason.
Spoiler alert: We're absolutely not sorry.
Summer Is Great... But Fall Feels Like Home
Don't get us wrong. Summer has its place. Sunshine, vacations, grilling with family—it all has its charm.
But for so many of us, fall isn't just a season. It's a feeling. It's slowing down after a busy summer. It's crisp mornings with a warm mug in your hands. It's football Saturdays, cozy sweatshirts, candles burning, leaves changing, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, haunted houses, Halloween movies, and the excitement of knowing the holidays are just around the corner. For us, fall feels like coming home.
August Is the Perfect Transition
By the time August rolls around, many of us are already shifting gears.
Kids are heading back to school.
Schedules become more structured.
The mornings start feeling just a little cooler (or at least we like to pretend they do!).
Starting to decorate or plan for fall in August helps us ease into the season instead of waking up on September 22 wondering where the year went. It's less about rushing summer—and more about stretching out the season we love most.
Fall Gives Us Something to Look Forward To
Let's be honest. Life gets busy. Between work, family, appointments, and everything else on our calendars, we all need something exciting to anticipate.
For us, that's fall.
The countdowns.
The first pumpkin candle.
The first scary movie marathon.
The first homemade chili.
The first excuse to wear a hoodie when it's still 75 degrees outside. Those little moments create joy, and there's nothing wrong with embracing them early.
It's About Nostalgia
One of the things we love talking about on the Slacks to Sweats Podcast is nostalgia.
Fall has a way of bringing back memories unlike any other season.
Walking into school with a brand-new backpack.
Watching Halloween specials after homework.
Picking apples with family.
Decorating pumpkins at the kitchen table.
Trick-or-treating until your pillowcase was overflowing with candy. Those memories stay with us, and celebrating early lets us reconnect with them a little longer.
There Are No Rules
Here's something we firmly believe:
You don't need permission to enjoy what makes you happy.
Love Christmas in November? Go for it.
Decorate for Halloween in August?
Absolutely. Keep your pumpkin decorations out until Thanksgiving? We fully support it. Joy doesn't have a calendar. If celebrating your favorite season a few weeks early makes your home feel happier and your heart feel lighter, that's reason enough.
Life Is Too Short to Wait
Every year seems to move a little faster. One minute it's Memorial Day. The next, you're wrapping Christmas presents. We've learned that waiting until the "official" start of a season often means missing weeks of the things we love most.
So yes—we'll light the fall candle.
We'll grab the pumpkin coffee.
We'll start planning Halloween.
We'll count down to Christmas.
And we'll happily enjoy every cozy moment along the way.
Join the Cozy Side
If you're already decorating in August, welcome to the club—we saved you a cozy seat. And if you're still holding onto summer, that's okay too. We'll have a pumpkin spice latte waiting whenever you're ready.
Here at Slacks to Sweats Podcast, we're all about celebrating the seasons, embracing nostalgia, and finding joy in life's little traditions. Because sometimes the best memories begin long before the calendar says they should.
So tell us... When do YOU start celebrating fall? August? September? October? We'd love to hear your answer!
