Welcome back Crude Twins fam. We're so glad you're here, and if you're new, we’re so happy to have you join us.

Today's episode delves into a significant topic—Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a condition that affects hormonal levels, and it's more common than you might think. In fact, one in ten women of child-bearing age is affected by PCOS. Even more concerning, around 70% of women with PCOS are not aware they have it.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. The condition has a variety of symptoms, making it hard to diagnose. Some common symptoms include acne, unwanted facial hair, and difficulties with fertility. The hormonal imbalance affects the ovaries' ability to function correctly.

Four Types of PCOS

In Episode 94, we discussed the four different types of PCOS. While each type has its specific traits, they all share the commonality of affecting hormonal balance. The four types are:

  • Insulin-Resistant PCOS: The most common type. It often leads to obesity and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Post-Pill PCOS: Triggered by the hormonal changes that occur after stopping birth control pills.
  • Inflammatory PCOS: Linked to inflammation in the body, resulting in various symptoms like headaches and skin issues.
  • Adrenal PCOS: Caused by an excess of stress hormones like cortisol, which can influence androgen levels.

Treating PCOS

Although dealing with PCOS can be challenging, several treatments are available. Medications can be prescribed to help regulate periods and reduce symptoms like acne and facial hair. Lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise can significantly alleviate symptoms. Additionally, treating insulin resistance through medication or dietary changes is often beneficial, especially for those with Insulin-Resistant PCOS.

The Role of Hormones in PCOS

Hormones play a crucial role in PCOS. Insulin resistance is frequently observed in women with PCOS, which contributes to the production of higher-than-normal levels of male hormones (androgens). This hormonal imbalance can be a significant factor in many of the symptoms experienced by those with PCOS.
